In the video «derviche» («dervish»), we recognise a sufi dancer (dervish spinner) sculpted in butter and placed on a vinyl record player. Sufi music is replace here by christian religious hymns. The dervish starts his dance and after few spins the butter starts flowing down to his robe and spreads on the record. The music carries on with interferrences triggering the collapse of the dervish. The record continues for a while and stops.
One could think of the representation of the cultural choc by the use of christian religious hymns which provokes the fall of the sufi dancer but it is more right to see this scene as an accusation of some forms of venerations, adorations, transes. |
