This work has been determined by the tensions, ambiguities and indeterminacy in experimental and radical theatre, performance and cinema.
The video uses The Wooster Group's theatre project HOUSE/LIGHTS as the basis for a series of sequences determined by elements of its original script. HOUSE/LIGHTS uses the texts from Gertrude Stein's Dr Faustus Lights the Lights commingled with Joseph Mawara's film Olga's House of Shame. In the development of this work, a punctuation or performative response has been devised to include a debate workshop on the work and drawings of Tom of Finland delivered in the manner of the monologues of Spalding Gray, a founder member of the Wooster Group. This video includes redrawn Tom of Finland pieces totally unrecognizable from their source and a sequence of men smoking cigars.
This is a video piece that is a mess of misinformation about The Wooster Group and the gay fetishist Tom of Finland. ItÂ’s resolves nothing and continues the pursuit of ambiguity and misreading. The work includes an image of Camille Keaton in the film I Spit on Your Grave in an attempt to connect House/Lights with a video nasty and a sequence from House/Lights by The Wooster Group videotaped online. Voice-overs come from a variety of sources including a leatherman hook-up web site and Kate Valk in conversation with Andrew Andrew. This video contains long sequences of meaningless graphic information in an attempt to force images with limited appeal become more appealing.
