Sinopsis: |
us between us is shot in Death Valley and deals with the underlying visceral emotions of growing up and apart from ones family. The video piece focuses on the relationship between grandfather, mother, and son as they explore a surreal, frightening, and yet fascinating landscape. The family meets, congregates, and then separates time and again, establishing a pattern of awkwardness as well as a kind of emotional hesitation within their interactions. There is a romanticism and a complexity inherent in the work symbolized by the density of layering and the fleeting quality of the physical connection. The piece highlights the paradox that while family provides an intimacy that is painful to be without, family also becomes a compromising mechanism that one is constantly trying to escape. There is also a darkness to the pieces, reinforced by the lack of dialogue, and suggestive of the temporary nature of life that one struggles to equate with the seemingly granted nature of family. |
